Department of Sports Bio-Sciences

Central University of Rajasthan has started Department of Sports Biosciences under the School of Sports Sciences MYAS-CURAJ supported by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS). The department runs three M.Sc. programs: M.Sc. Sports Physiology, M.Sc. Sports Biochemistry and M.Sc. Sports Nutrition. These courses would enhance the knowledge of the students in Sports Biosciences and improve their level of understanding with underlying biological scientific principles in sports sciences. The courses would emphasize on both theoretical and laboratory aspects and most specifically the biochemical and nutritional analysis together with computational simulation. The program would also allow students to interact and carry out their practical tests both on the field with the athletes/sports persons during the games and sports. This would allow the students to enrich and sharpen their knowledge both in instrumentation techniques and software for understanding the underlying intricacies of sports activities and improvisation of the games/sports. Appealing to those with an enthusiasm for biosciences of sports, physical activity and human biology, these courses would teach how sporting performance can be improved to ensure individual level success and achieve improvisation in the potential of sports persons.

M.Sc. Sports Biochemistry

(a) Name of the Program: M. Sc. Sports Biochemistry (2 years)

(b) Objectives of the program: 

  1. The students opting for  this programme will have an advanced understanding on the biochemical and metabolic aspects of Sports, physical activity
  2. The program will provide knowledge on drugs doping in sports, Sports injuries and recovery for achieving satisfactory performance in games and sports.
  3. It would contribute in understanding metabolic adaptations to sports training.
  4. This programme will also cover knowledge on nutrition, genetics, immunology, biomechanics, psychology, statistics, analytical biochemistry and anthropometry in the context of sports/exercise.
  5. This program will also provide an opportunity to the students to have better understanding on both the theoretical and practical aspects of sports biochemistry.
  6. The student graduating from this program will develop primary level of expertise on the key principles of biochemical functioning of the body during exercise and sports.
  7. The students pursuing this program will develop the potential to interpret laboratory based wet lab experimental data with the field based sports data and deduce better conclusions for its utilization for the sports persons.

(c)Intake and eligibility:

  • Approved Intake: 30 Students
  • Minimum Eligibility for entry: Bachelors’ Degree in Biochemistry/Life Sciences/ any other branch of Science/or any other examination recognized equivalent there to or higher degree, any Medical (MBBS, BDS, BAMS) BPT/Allied Medical Sciences degree with 50% marks or equivalent grade in aggregate for General category and 45% or equivalent grade for SC/ST/OBC/PWD candidates and must have at least one course in Biology at 12th standard/ Intermediate level.

M.Sc. Sports Nutrition

(a) Name of the Program: M. Sc. Sports Nutrition (2 Years)

(b) Objectives of the program:

  1. This Programme will help the students to understand the science behind sports nutrition, which is designed especially for students from biological science and Nutrition interested in pursuing their career as a sports nutritionist or a researcher in sports nutrition.  
  2. This program will help to develop a career in Sports Nutrition, where the students will systematically understand and be critically aware of the underlying basic nutritional concepts for a sports person.
  3. The students of this programme will get an opportunity to have in-depth understanding of the nutritional and metabolic demands of sports and exercise. They can demonstrate advanced skills in the critical appraisal of research and the evaluation of interventions in relation to the current evidence based on sports and nutrition.
  4. The students will also have an understanding about the interactions between diet and sports/exercise and its impact on the health of Sports person/athlete together with the influence of nutrition on their performance in sports.
  5. Students will learn to develop a team approach, display adequate team building, and soft skills, to ensure implementation and monitoring of sport-specific nutritional support.
  6. The programme aims to deliver qualitative research based teaching for strengthening the teaching and learning process with expert lectures from different parts of country and Abroad.
  7. Study on the effect of Dietary supplements on the sports performance and cardiovascular health of Sports person or athletes followed by optimization of nutritional requirements of sports persons would be an advantage for the students of this programme.
  8. The students will also be educated to analyze the nutritional and dietary impact on sports performance both before and after sports activity or exercise.
  9. As the sports nutrition industry is gaining its importance with yoga and gyms in common people’s day today routine activities, this programme will help students to specialize in nutrition specific to sports activities and can contribute a lot to the Industry at a large.
  1. The programme facilitated to study the advanced science behind performance nutrition understanding industrial requirements filling the gap between academia and Industry reaching to the sports person and athletes on the grounds.  
  1. The students will have the opportunity to use the analytical equipment’s available in the chemistry, microbiology, pharmacy, biochemistry departments in the campus along with the equipment’s of the department of sports biosciences for testing the food quality.
  2. The students will also be using several nutritional softwares developed for exercise and sports existing in the department for understanding them and planning for new developments in sports nutrition softwares.
  3. This programme is solely dedicated for developing sports nutrition research and teaching by understanding the conventional and contemporary exercise metabolism and translating into sports person/athlete specific nutrition recommendations.
  4. This programme will teach the students to make unconventional decisions in complicated and unprecedented situations, which would directly or indirectly contribute to the essential support framework demanded by the sports person/athlete/sport industry for improving their performance or achieving success in their respective endeavors. This would also help in global scientific innovation and research and its application of designed nutritional support to the sports persons or athletes for achieving their goals overcoming the setbacks.
  1. The students pursuing this programme will have the opportunity to be involved in research work during their dissertation work in collaboration with peripheral sports Academies and centres under Sports Authority of India (SAI) and Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) in the existing Sports nutrition research laboratory in CURAJ.

M.Sc. Sports Physiology

(1)  (a) Name of the Program: M.Sc. Sports Physiology              

(b) Objectives of the program: The 2-Years Master’s Program would help to develop a      career   in Sports/Exercise Physiology. One will be provided with advanced knowledge based on the latest research in the theory and practice of a range of different areas in Sports Physiology for the benefit of performance and health. This course offers thorough theoretical, conceptual and practical aspects on physiological assessment techniques, exercise performance and the physiological characteristics of the neuromuscular system with application to sport and injury. Every students would get an opportunity to improve his/her knowledge in research by carrying out dissertation work on applied fields of sports Physiology using the facilities available in the Department

 (c) Intake and eligibility:  30 Students

Bachelor’s Degree in Physiology / Life Sciences/any other branch of Science/ or any other examination recognized equivalent there to or higher degree, any medical (MBBS, BDS, BAMS)/BPT/ allied Medical Sciences degree with 50% marks or equivalent grade in aggregate for General category and 45% or equivalent grade for SC/ST/OBC/PWD candidates.

A consistently good academic record possessing a Master’s Degree in the subject concerned including M.Sc. Sports Biochemistry/ M.Sc. Sports Nutrition/M.Sc. Sports Physiology/ Life Sciences/ Nutrition or any other relevant allied subject with minimum of 55% marks or equivalent grade from a recognized University at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels; 5% relaxation in minimum requirement of marks is granted to SC/ST/OBC/PWD/EWS candidates

The department is in the process of developing a well-equipped laboratory to carry out the practical/laboratory exercises in the area of Sports Physiology, Sports Biochemistry and Sports Nutrition together with Computational facility. The laboratory set up at the department would allow the students to enrich and sharpen their knowledge both in instrumentation techniques and software.

The lab facilities at the Department of Sports Biosciences aim to expand further to cater the needs of the students in research. However, the current lab facilities include the assessment of the following:

  • Body Composition Analysis
  • Biochemical Parameters
  • Anatomical Models
  • Physical Fitness
  • Physiological Parameters
  • Computer Lab

The Sports Biosciences department strives to be on the forefront of research in the field of Sports Physiology, Sports Nutrition and Sports Biochemistry. These are the advanced research areas in the global scenario. The research in these areas addresses the need for improvement in sports performance and wellbeing/wellness of the sports persons. The department is currently in progress of establishing well furnished-state of the art laboratories. The School has a trained and dedicated pool of researchers to tap this potential. Various sophisticated equipment’s are in the process of procurement very soon in the near future to cater the needs of the M.Sc. students and research work.

Department organised its first successful event in the form of Sports Science Week named ‘Sports Kinesia-2018’ many students from various Departments of CURAJ participated in different events organised for the whole week and more than 100 people (including students and faculty) participated and got to know their body and nutritional aspects of their health and fitness analysed on the last day of the week in event named as ‘Know Your Body and Nutritional consultation’
