1. Electrochemical sensor for detection of heavy metals in drinking water: We aim to develop an electrochemical sensor to detect toxic metals such as Pb, Cu, Fe, As, Cd, and Hg (commonly found in India's water) in drinking water without adding any supporting electrolyte or reagent. Our goal is to quantify trace levels of multiple heavy metal ions simultaneously and ensure the sensor operates autonomously. The sensor can be used for onsite applications and can be fitted into the service pipeline of drinking water systems for regular monitoring of heavy metals.

2. Electrochemical and biosensors for detection of biomolecules in biofluids: Real-time sensing presents an intriguing and cost-effective way to monitor the well-being of the human body, which would be very useful for early-stage medical diagnosis and healthcare. We work on the development of macro-, micro-, and nano-electrochemical and biosensor devices for the sensitive and selective determination of drugs (including those banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency; WADA), hormones, neurotransmitters, and DNA & RNA damage biomarkers present in biofluids such as serum, urine, saliva, and sweat. This project also involves the development of point-of-care diagnostic systems using ultrasensitive lab-on-a-chip devices, where all three electrodes are based on carbon nanotubes or printed carbon nanomaterials, and integrated with a small portable potentiostat for analyte quantification.

3. Electrochemistry at the interface of nanomaterials: The goal of this research is to understand the fundamental electron transfer kinetics at the micro/nano interface where electrochemical reaction processes take place. Scanning electrochemical cell microscopy (SECCM) is a potential technique to reveal major new perspectives on the intrinsic electrochemical activity of nanomaterials. Scanning electrochemical techniques will be used to directly probe individual entities and in biomedical research.

4. Monitoring Quantal Fluctuations of Neurotransmitters in healthy and diseased brain: In this project, the main goal is to develop novel, cutting-edge analytical tools that provide sufficient speed and sensitivity, and are small enough to be placed directly at synapses and inside the cytoplasm of neurons. The aim is to explore the nature of quantized neurotransmitters at the synapse and to address how quantal neurotransmitter transmission relates to synaptic plasticity, learning, and memory. Additionally, the project will investigate how plaque formation in Alzheimer’s disease may affect quantal neurotransmitter transmission at presynaptic terminals.
