2011-13

1. Candida albicans biology: Understanding survival strategies evolved in Candida albicans in response to non-significant microenvironmental changes and identifying novel drugs and drug targets.

i.      Identified more than one dozen plant derived agents as potent inhibitors of C. albicans growth (with mode of action) both planktonic and difficult-to-treat biofilms (Thakre et al. 2020, 2018a, b, c; 2016; Zore et al. 2011a, b;  Devkatte et al. 2005, PeptideAtlas PASS01003).

ii.    Shown first time the role of OxPhos in C. albicans morphogenesis(Ahmed et al. 2018).

iii.  Identified microenvironment responsive proteins (LC-MS/MS analysis), genes (RNASeq analysis using Illumina HiSeq2500 platform) and fatty acids (Mazen et al 2022, Ingle et. al 2019, Shiradhone et al. 2018, Ingle et al. 2016, Zore et al. 2018, Rapte et al. 2015, Kodgire et al. 2016, Mulange et al. 2018, PeptideAtlas: PASS01057-59, 61,71, 77, 87, 90, 92).

iv.  First report of low hydrostatic pressure equivalent to (CHP) inhibit morphogenesis and thus modulate antimicrobial susceptibility (Rapte et al. 2015, Zore et al. 2019).

v.     Identified fungal specific HPIH motif in fungal HMGCR.

2. Plant Biotechnology: Improve heat tolerance in wheat and virus resistance in vegetables.

i.      Identified a gene regulating grain number in wheat (Gill et al. 2017, US provisional Patent, no 62486401).

ii.    Structural and functional characterization to understand role of wheat SnRk1 and SuSy genes in heat tolerance through RNAi and genome editing tools (Wagh et al. 2019, Kale et al. 2019).

iii.  Identified novel host factors for developing virus resistance in selected vegetables using genome editing (Karnawar et al. 2019).

iv.  Optimized a protocol for wheat and sunflower chloroplast transformation and characterizing potential targets for developing virus resistant brinjal and tomato using genome editing (Wagh et al. 2017, Karnawar et al. 2019).

3.Contribution in Innovation and Incubation Activities and Startup ecosystem on Campus:

i.       As a Coordinator, proposed an Incubation center entitled, Centre for Agro-Bio-Innovation and Incubation’ (CABII) and received grant of Rs. 500 L from the Maharashtra State Innovation Society (MSInS), Govt. of Maharashtra, Mumbai in 2018.

ii.     Since then, led the center till Nov. 2021 to promote ‘Innovation and Incubation activities and to develop startup ecosystem’, organized a startup idea competition.

4. MDCRL: Established MDCRL:

i.        First University Lab in the country having NABL accreditation to test Covid19 swabs (extramural funds of ~200 L).

ii.      Tested more than 3 L samples till Oct. 2022 and contributed in saving lives of thousands of patients by providing rapid diagnosis and thus treatment.
