Major Research Interest of the Laboratory

Development of novel types of antimicrobial peptides for the management of drug resistant pathogenic strains

The resistant pathogenic bacteria (Salmonella, E. coli, Acinetobacter, S. aureus etc.) are great threat to the public health worldwide. Up to 10 million deaths could occur annually by 2050 due to antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Our lab is interested to develop the novel types of peptides to control the antibiotic/ drug resistant pathogenic strains by producing antivirulence compounds/ path blockers. The aim of our laboratory is also to the synthesizing the new types of peptides for the inhibition of these ‘superbug’ types pathogenic strains by the novel approaches.

Understanding the molecular mechanism of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) of drug resistant bacteria

For the development of new peptides to tackle these pathogenic strains, first it is important to know the molecular mechanism of drug resistance. Therefor, our lab is also interested to know the mechanism through which they develop resistant power to antibiotics/ drugs. Most of the bacteria act on beta-lactam antibiotics to make them ineffective. Some of the bacteria use their metabolic pathways as defense mechanism i.e., glutathione biosynthesis. The effective and successful peptides may be designed after the elucidating/understanding the mechanism of AMR.
